FINGERPRINTS OF THE GODS

A QUEST FOR THE BEGINNING AND THE END

Graham Hancock 1995

Chapter 32

Speaking to the Unborn

Page 285

"It is understandable that a huge range of myths from all over the ancient world should describe geological catastrophes in graphic detail. Mankind survived the horror of the last Ice Age, and the most plausible source for our enduring traditions of flooding and freezing, massive volcanism and devastating earthquakes is in the tumultuous upheavals unleashed during the great meltdown of 15,000 to 8000 BC. The final retreat of the ice sheets, and the consequent 300-400 foot rise in global sea levels, took place only a few thousand years before the beginning of the historical period. It is therefore not surprising that all our early civilizations should have retained vivid memories of the vast cataclysms that had terrified their forefathers.
Much harder to explain is the peculiar but distinctive way the myths of cataclysm seem to bear the intelligent imprint of a guiding hand.l Indeed the degree of convergence between such ancient stories is frequently remarkable enough to raise the suspicion that they must all have been 'written' by the same 'author'.
Could that author have had anything to do with the wondrous deity, or superhuman, spoken of in so many of the myths we have reviewed, who appears immediately after the world has been shattered by a horrifying geological catastrophe and brings comfort and the gifts of civilization to the shocked and demoralized survivors?
White and bearded, Osiris is the Egyptian manifestation of this / Page 286 / universal figure, and it may not be an accident that one of the first acts he is remembered for in myth is the abolition of cannibalism among the primitive inhabitants of the Nile Valley.2 Viracocha, in South America, was said to have begun his civilizing mission immediately after a great flood; Quetzalcoatl, the discoverer of maize, brought the benefits of crops, mathematics, astronomy and a refined culture to Mexico after the Fourth Sun had been overwhelmed by a destroying deluge.
Could these strange myths contain a record of encounters between scattered palaeolithic tribes which survived the last Ice Age and an as yet unidentified high civilization which passed through the same epoch?
And could the myths be attempts to communicate?

A message in the bottle of time

'Of all the other stupendous inventions,' Galileo once remarked,

what sublimity of mind must have been his who conceived how to communicate his most secret thoughts to any other person, though very distant either in time or place, speaking with those who are in the Indies, speaking to those who are not yet born, nor shall be this thousand or ten thousand years? And with no greater difficulty than the various arrangements of two dozen little signs on paper? Let this be the seal of all the admirable inventions of men.3

If the 'precessional message' identified by scholars like Santillana, von Dechend and Jane Sellers is indeed a deliberate attempt at communication by some lost civilization of antiquity, how come it wasn't just written down and left for us to find? Wouldn't that have been easier than encoding it in myths? Perhaps.
Nevertheless, suppose that whatever the message was written on got destroyed or worn away after many thousands of years? Or suppose that the language in which it was inscribed was later forgotten utterly (like the enigmatic Indus Valley script, which has been studied closely for more than half a century but has so far resisted all attempts at decoding)? It must be obvious that in such circumstances a written / Page 287 / legacy to the future would be of no value at all, because nobody would be able to make sense of it.
What one would look for, therefore, would be a universal language, the kind of language that would be comprehensible to any technologically advanced society in any epoch, even a thousand or ten thousand years into the future. Such languages are few and far between, but mathematics is one of them - and the city of Teotihuacan may be the calling-card of a lost civilization written in the eternal language of mathematics.
Geodetic data, related to the exact positioning of fixed geographical points and to the shape and size of the earth, would also remain valid and recognizable for tens of thousands of years, and might be most conveniently expressed by means of cartography (or in the construction of giant geodetic monuments like the Great Pyramid of Egypt, as we shall see).
Another 'constant' in our solar system is the language of time: the great but regular intervals of time calibrated by the inch-worm creep of precessional motion. Now, or ten thousand years in the future, a message that prints out numbers like 72 or 2160 or 4320or 25,920 should be instantly intelligible to any civilization that has evolved a modest talent for mathematics and the ability to detect and measure the almost imperceptible reverse wobble that the sun appears to make along the ecliptic against the background of the fixed stars..."

"What one would look for, therefore, would be a universal language, the kind of language that would be comprehensible to any technologically advanced society in any epoch, even a thousand or ten thousand years into the future. Such languages are few and far between, but mathematics is one of them"

CITY OF REVELATION

John Michell 1972

Page 169

"The great alchemists, whose ultimate aspiration was to procure the birth of a divinity among men found it necessary first to invoke within themselves the spirit they wished to share with others. In the same tradition Plato wrote that the man who aquires the art of stereometry, the likening of unlike things which is function of the canon, sanctifies not only himself but also the city and the age in which he lives. The thought behind these various expressions was that the state of a society is determined by the individuals who comprise it; that the cosmic influences are manifest on earth through the medium of the human mind, and this is the instrument by which they may be controlled and held in balance. For the instument to be effective, it requires that the individual become aware of the current influences to which he is subject, and to this end the canon was devised; for by analogy with the dynamics of geometrical and numerological relationships, the world of phenomena is revealed as the product of archetyple forces, whose behaviour in any circumstances is predicatable once the nature is understood."

"the art of stereometry, the likening of unlike things"

CITY OF REVELATION

John Michell 1972

Page 109
At the root of our traditional units of measurement is the ancient, mystical science of numbers, to which Plato makes an obscure reference towards the end of Epinomis, here quoted from Lamb's translation.

`The most important and first (study) is of numbers in themselves: not of those which are corporeal, but of the whole origin of the odd and the even and the greatness of their influence on the nature of reality. When he has learnt these things, there comes next what they call by the very ridiculous name of geometry, when it proves to be a manifest likening of numbers not like one another by nature in respect of the province of planes; and this will be clearly seen by him who is able to understand it to be a marvel, not of human but of divine origin. And then, after that, the numbers thrice increased and like to the solid nature, and those again which have been made unlike, he likens by another art, namely that which its adepts call stereometry.'

The text is probably corrupt, the expressions are unfamiliar and it is hard to follow Plato's meaning. But the reference, both here and in another passage in Laws, is to some method of relating different classes of phenomena to one numerical system, by which the adept may come to understand the unifying principle in nature. Of this knowledge Plato declares that it is the greatest of all blessings both to him who possessed it and to his community, but if it can not be acquired, the best substitute is simple faith in God since, on the / Page 110 / word of an initiate, matters are far better arranged than we can possibly conceive. He continues,

`Every diagram and system of number and every combination of harmony and the agreement of the revolution of the stars must be made manifest as one in all to him who learns in the proper way, and will be made manifest if a man learns aright by keeping his eyes on unity; for it will be manifest to us as we reflect, that there is one bond naturally uniting all these things.'

SECRET CHAMBERS

"The point that is being made here is that there existed a sacred science in Egypt that could only be imparted to gifted individuals with a strong predisposition for intuitive learning - the type of learning that is done with the human apparatus of perception, with the fine tuning of the five senses such that they functioned jointly as super receivers and transmitters of messages. Thus the initiation or training of natural magicians was to fine-tune the sensory perception. Anyone can fine-tune his sense to 'read' the messages of nature. However, to be a magician is to be able to reverse the process, i.e. to transmit the messages to others by using the 'language of the gods'. This is the arcana arcanorum, the ultimate secret of the magician. Thoth, the inventor of this magic, was supreme in its application. Equipped with such a cognition of Thoth, we can now examine the purpose of his divine mission as 'messenger' of the gods."

THE SIRIUS MYSTERY

Was Earth visited by intelligent beings from a planet in the system of the Star Sirius

Robert K.G. Temple 1976

Page 183

"But a close inspection of the way things are said here won't let that kind of interpretation stand up. Apart from the fact that the Egyptians were incredibly precise in what they said: what is said in the texts is what is said in the texts"

IN SEARCH OF ZARATHUSTRA

Paul Kriwaczek 1988

"The everlasting God above, who beholds all things, with whom is all power, who upholds the order of this universe,

unmarred, unageing, unerring, unfathomable in beauty and in splendour, fear Him my sons, and never yield to sin or

wickedness, in thought, in word, or in deed. And after the Almighty, I would have you revere the whole race of man, as it

renews itself for ever; for God has not hidden you in the darkness, and your, deeds will be manifest in the eyes of all

mankind. If they be righteous and free from iniquity, they will blazen forth your power; but if you meditate evil against

each other you will forfeit the confidence of every man."

THE

BOOK

ON THE TABOO AGAINST KNOWING WHO YOU ARE

Alan Watts 1969

"HOW TO BE A GENUINE FAKE"

Page 53

"THE CAT has already been let out of the bag. The inside information is that yourself as "just little me" who "came into this world" and lives temporarily in a bag of skin is a hoax and a fake. The fact is that because no one thing or feature of this universe is separable from the whole, the only real You, or Self, is the whole. The rest of this book will attempt to make this so clear that you will not only understand the words but feel the fact. The first step is to understand, as vividly as possible, how the hoax begins.
We must first look at the form and behavior of the hoax itself. I have long been interested in trying to find out how people experience, or sense, their own existence-for what specific sensations do they use the word "I"?
Few people seem to use the word for their whole physical organism. "I have a body" is more common than "I am a body." We speak of "my" legs as we speak of "my" clothes, and "I" seems to remain intact even if the legs are amputated. We say, "I speak, I walk, I think, and (even) I breathe." But we do not say, "I shape my bones, I grow my nails, and I circulate my blood." We seem to use "I" for something in the body but not really of the body, for much of what goes on in the body seems to happen to. "I" in the same way as external events. "I" is used as the center of voluntary behavior and conscious atten tion, but not consistently. Breathing is only partially voluntary, and we say "I was sick" or "I dreamed" or "I fell asleep" as if the verbs were not passive but active."

" Nevertheless, "I" usually refers to a center in the body, but different peoples feel it in different places. For some cultures, it is in the region of the solar plexus. The Chinese hsin, the heart-mind or soul, is found in the center of the chest. But most Westerners locate the ego in the head, from which center the rest of us dangles. :The ego is somewhere behind the eyes and between the ears. It is as if there sat beneath the dome of the skull a controlling officer who wears earphones wired to the ears, and watches a television screen wired to the eyes. Before him stands a great panel of dials and switches connected with all other parts of the body that yield conscious information or respond to the officer's will. .
This controlling officer "sees" sight, "hears" sounds, "feels" feelings, and "has" experiences. These are common but redundant ways of talking, for seeing a sight is just seeing, hearing a sound is just hearing, feeling a feeling is just feeling, and having an experience is just experiencing. But that these redundant phrases are so commonly used shows that most people think of themselves as separate from their thoughts and experiences. All this can get marvelously complicated when we begin to wonder whether our officer has another officer inside his head, and so ad infinitum!

There was a young man who said,

"Though' It seem that I know that I know,

What I would like to see

Is the 'I' that knows 'me'

When I know that I know that I know."

." The ego -trick seems to reaffinn itself endlessly in posture after posture.
But as I pursue these games-as I become more conscious of being conscious, more aware that I am unable to define myself as being up without you (or something other than myself) being down-I see vividly that I depend on your being down for my being up. I would never be able to know that I belong to the in-group of "nice" or "saved" people without the assistance of I an out-group of "nasty" or "damned" people. How can any in-group maintain its collective ego without relishing dinnertable discussions about the ghastly conduct of outsiders? The very identity of racist Southerners depends upon contrasting themselves with those dirty black' "nigras." But, conversely, the out-groups feel that they are really and truly "in," and nourish their collective ego with relishingly indignant conversation about squares, Ofays, Wasps, Philistines, and the blasted bourgeoisie. Even Saint Thomas Aquinas let it out that part of the blessedness of the saints in Heaven was that they could look over the battlements and enjoy the "proper justice" of the sinners squinning in Hell. All winners need losers; all saints need sinners; all sages need fools-that is, so long as the major kick in life is to "amount to something" or to "be someone" as a particular and separate godlet.

Page 107

"But I define myself in terms of.you; I know myself only in terms of what is "other," no matter whether I see the "other" as below me or above me in any ladder of values. If above, I enjoy the kick of self-pity; if below, I enjoy the kick of pride. I being I goes with you being you. Thus, as a great Hassidic rabbi put it, "If I am I because you are you, and if you are you because I am I, then I am not I. and you are not you." Instead we are both something in common between what Martin Buber has called I-and-Thou and I-and-It-the magnet itself which / Page 108 / lies between the poles, between I myself and everything sensed as other."

ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS
Compiled by Charles Legge

QUESTION My 14 year-old-students studying their first year of English as a third language would like to know why the personal pronoun 'I' is always written with a capital letter?

IN OLD English, the first person singular pronoun was ic or ik.
From the beginning of the Middle English period (1100-1500) ic, ik gave way to an unaccented form i and y first used only before consonants. This form gradually became general in most parts of the country except in the South of England where the is form remained commonplace. Indeed, in South-West British dialects ich, and related forms (utch, ch, che, utchy) were in use as late as the 18th century.
In late-Middle English, the ich form was seen as humorous or rustic by sophisticated Northerners. In The Second Shepherds' Play, from the Wakefield Cycle of mystery plays from the 15th century, a Northern thief called Mak tries.to steal some sheep from shepherds Coll, Gyb and Daw.
He attempts to affect a Southern accent but fails to keep it consistent:

What! ich be a yoman, I tell you, of
the kyng,
The self and the same, sond from a
greatt lordyng,
And sich.
Ffy on you! Goyth hence
Out of my presence!
I must haue reuerence.
Why, who be ich?

When the Northern forms of the pronoun established themselves, squeezing ich south of the Thames, the capital I gradually became predominant. Its use is first recorded in around 1250 in an early English manuscript for the folk song The Story Of Genesis And Exodus, but became increasingly popular froth the 14th century. Chaucer used this form in his Canterbury Tales (written at the end of the 14th century). Here's an example from The Knight's Tale:

And thus with victorie and with melodye Lete I this noble duk to Atthenes ryde, And al his hoost, in armes hym bisyde. And certes, if it nere to long to heere,
I wolde have toold yow fully the manere How wonnen was the regne of Femenye By Theseus, and by his chivalrye.

Why this irregular form appeared and conquered all is uncertain. Chambers Dictionary Of Etymology hypothesises that this form developed 'to avoid misreading handwritten manuscripts'. Otto Jespersen, in Growth And Structure Of The English Language, states: 'The reason for writing I is the orthographic habit in the Middle Ages of using a long i, (that is, j or I), whenever the letter was isolated or formed the last letter of a group; the numeral one was written j or I (and three iij, etc) just as much as the pronoun.'
Another theory is ego. Other languages capitalise the second person pronoun as in German Sie, the Danish De, Italian Lei or Loro and the Finnish Te. These are all the opposite of ego, intended to show respect to the party being communicated. Oscar Weise, in his History Of Language, goes so far as to say the Englishman, who as the ruler of the seas looks down in contempt on the rest of Europe, writes in his language nothing but the beloved / with a big aristocratic "I".'
Some intangible mixture of aesthetics, convention, phonology, clarity, egotism, and orthography seem to have conspired during the English language's 'Great Upheaval' to produce a form that appears natural today.
Janine Donaghue, Chalfont St Giles, Bucks.

The- high ancestry of the human Ego, the" I myself," the "I" of the first person singular is reflected in the Greek and Latin term Ego, the "Great O." The Anglo-Saxon for "I" was Ic and the Old English Ik. The Dutch is Ik, the Icelandic is Ek, and the German Ich. The French Je means the ever-existent, and in the Danish and Swedish Jeg and Jag we are again confronted with" ever-existent great one." The Lithuanian for "I myself" is Asz, i.e. the "light of the strong Light," and in the Sanscrit Aham there is, as it were, an echo1 of the words "I AM"

'r' and I in the Egyptian language,

Page 97

In Egyptian a vegetative Osiris would be known as Asar-rutu but as is well known, the liquid 'r' and I are in Egyptian entirely interchangeable and represented by the same hieroglyph.

Page 116

Now we recall that in Egyptian the letter "I"are and the letter 'r' entirely interchangeable and have the same hieroglyph.

Page 120

The letters "I" and 'r' are interchangeable phonetic liquids.

Page 192

In short they are interchangeable at the level of terminology as the "I" and 'r' were interchangeable in Egyptian at the level of pronuncination and symbol

John Michell 1983

Page 150

"A series of clues to the composition of the final pyramidion at the very apex of the Pyramid begins with an observation in A.E. Berriman's Historical Metrology on the antiquity of the British or Imperial inch. There are a number of old Egyptian weights in the British Museum, and others from Greece and Babylon, whose standard of reference has proved to be the cubic inch of gold. PYRAMID = 86 = PYRAMID

PYRAMID = 41 = PYRAMID

PYRAMID = 5 = PYRAMID

Five is the number chiefly associated with the pyramid form; which has five faces and five corners,

ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS

QUESTION Are the three stars that make up Orion's belt a similar distance from the Earth or do they just appear that way?

ORION, the giant huntsman of Greek mythology whom Zeus placed among the stars as the constellation, has three stars of apparently similar brightness and colour (bluish-white) in his belt, given the Arabic names (from left to right) Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka.

In fact, Alnitak is 800 light years away from us, Alnilam 1,300 light years and Mintaka 900 light years. They appear in a straight line only in our line of sight.
Despite this, the three stars appear to be closely associated. Each is a luminous, hot supergiant having luminosities at least 100,000 times that of the Sun, and surface temperatures exceeding 25,000c (our Sun is 5,500c).

It's believed the three stars, and several other equally hot and luminous stars in the constellation Orion, were formed together as a close cluster. The passage of time has seen them drift apart.

Such luminous stars use up hydrogen at a prodigious rate so they're only a few million years old and have no more than a few million years to live before blowing themselves up in a supernova explosion.

These timescales are short in astronomical terms. Our Sun, with its far lower luminosity and lower fuel consumption, has shone for five billion years and is expected to shine steadily for the same amount of time before it, too, dies, in a much more sedate fashion than a supernova explosion.

The five billion years that our Sun has been around has meant that life has had time to develop on one of its planets — Earth.
It seems most unlikely that any hypopthetical planet around a star in Orion's belt could have developed sort of life when the history of the star, from birth to death, is only a few million years.

FINGERPRINTS OF THE GODS

A QUEST FOR THE BEGINNING AND THE END

Graham Hancock 1995

Chapter 42

Anachronisms and Enigmas

Page 389

I looked around the grey-walled chamber of Unas, up and down the long registers of hieroglyphs in which the Pyramid Texts were inscribed. They were written in a dead language. Nevertheless, the constant affirmation, repeated over and over again in these ancient compositions, was that of life — eternal life — which was to be achieved through the pharaoh's rebirth as a star in the constellation of Orion. As the reader will recall from Chapter Nineteen, (where we compared Egyptian beliefs with those of Ancient Mexico), there were several utterances which voiced this aspiration explicitly:

Oh King, you are this Great Star, the Companion of Orion, who traverses the sky with Orion . . . you ascend from the east of the sky being renewed in your due season, and rejuvenated in your due time . . .'1

Though undeniably beautiful there was nothing inherently extraordinary about these sentiments, and it was by no means impossible to astribute them to a people assessed by the French archaeologist Gaston Maspero as having 'always remained half savage'.2 Furthermore, since Maspero had been the first Egyptologist to enter the pyramid of Unas,3 and was considered a great authority on the Texts, it w hardly surprising that his opinions should have shaped all academic responses to this literature since he began to publish translations from it in the 1880s.4 Maspero (with a little help from a /Page 390/ jackal) had brought the Pyramid Texts to the world. Thereafter, the dominance of his particular prejudices about the past had functioned as a filter on knowledge, inhibiting variant interpretations of the more opaque or puzzling utterances. This seemed to me to be unfortunate to say the least. What it meant was that, despite the technical and scientific puzzles raised by monuments like the Great Pyramid at Giza, scholars had ignored the implications of some striking passages in the Texts.

These passages sounded suspiciously like attempts to express complex technical and scientific imagery in an entirely inappropriate idiom. Maybe it was coincidence, but the result resembled the outcome that we might expect today if we were to try to translate Einstein's Theory of Relativity into Chaucerian English or to describe a supersonic aircraft in vocabulary derived from Middle High German.

Broken images of a lost technology?

Take for example some of the peculiar equipment and accessories designated for the pharaoh's use as he journeyed to his eternal resting place among the stars:

The gods who are in the sky are brought to you, the gods who are on earth assemble for you, they place their hands under you, they make a ladder for you that you may ascend on it into the sky, the doors of the sky are thrown open to you, the doors of the starry firmament are thrown open for you.5

The ascending pharaoh was identified with, and frequently referred to, as 'an Osiris'. Osiris himself, as we have seen, was frequently linked to and associated with the constellation of Orion. Osiris-Orion was said to have been the first to have climbed the great ladder the gods had made. And several utterances left no doubt that this ladder had not extended upwards from earth to heaven but downwards from heaven to earth. It was described as a rope-ladder6 and the belief was that it had hung from an 'iron plate' suspended in the sky.'7

Were we dealing here, I wondered simply with the bizarre /Page 391/ imaginings of half-savage priests? Or might there be some other explanation for allusions such as these?

In Utterance 261, 'The King is a flame, moving before the wind to the end of the sky and to the end of the earth . . . the King travels the air and traverses the earth . . . there is brought to him a way of ascent to the sky . . .'8

Switching to dialogue, Utterance 310 proclaimed,

' O you whose vision is in his face and whose vision is in the back of his head, bring this to me!'

`What ferry-boat shall be brought to you?'

`Bring me: "It-flies-and-alights".9

Utterance 332, supposedly spoken by the King himself, confided, `I am this one who has escaped from the coiled serpent, I have ascended in a blast of fire having turned myself about. The two skies go to me.10

And in Utterance 669 it was asked, 'Wherewith can the King be made to fly-up?

The reply was given: 'There shall be brought to you the Hnw-bark [italicized word untranslatable] and the . . . [text missing] of the hn-bird [italicized word untranslatable]. You shall fly up therewith . . . You shall fly up and alight.'11

Other passages also seemed to me worthy of more thorough investigation than they have received from scholars. Here are a few examples:

O my father, great King, the aperture of the sky-window is opened for you:12

`The door of the sky at the horizon opens to you, the gods are glad at meeting you . . . May you sit on this iron throne of yours, as the Great One who is in Heliopolis.13

O King, may you ascend . . . The sky reels at you, the earth quakes at you, the Imperishable Stars are afraid of you. I have come to you, O you whose seats are hidden, that I may embrace you in the sky . . . 14

The earth speaks, the gate of the earth god is open, the doors of Geb are opened for you . . . May you remove yourself to the sky upon your iron throne:15

Page 392

O my father the King, such is your going when you have gone as a god, your travelling as a celestial being . . . you stand in the Conclaves of the horizon . . and sit on this throne of iron at which the gods marvel . . . 16

The constant references to iron, though easy to overlook, were puzzling. Iron, I knew, had been a rare metal in Ancient Egypt, particularly in the Pyramid Age when it had supposedly only been available in meteoritic form.' Yet here, in the Pyramid Texts, there seemed to be an embarrassment of iron riches: iron plates in the sky, iron thrones, and elsewhere an iron sceptre (Utterance 665C) and even iron bones for the King (Utterances 325, 684 and 723).18

In the Ancient Egyptian language the name for iron had been bja, a word that meant literally 'metal of heaven' or 'divine metal'.19 The knowledge of iron was thus regarded as yet another gift from the gods . . .

Repositories of a lost science?

What other fingerprints might these gods have left behind in the Pyramid Texts?20

In my readings — here and there among the most archaic of the Utterances — I had come across several metaphors that seemed to refer to the passage of epochs ofprecessional time. These metaphors stood out from the surrounding material because they were expressed in what had become a clear and familiar terminology to me: that of the archaic scientific language identified by Santillana and von Dechend in Hamlet's Mill.21
The reader may recall that a cosmic 'diagram' of the four props of the sky was one of the standard thought tools employed in that ancient language. Its purpose was to assist visualisation of the four imaginary bands conceived as framing, supporting and defining a precessional world age. These were what astronomers call the equinoctial and solstitial colures' and were seen as hooping down from the celestial north pole and marking the four constellations against the background of which, for periods of 2160 years at a time, the sun would consistently rise on the spring and autumn equinoxes and on the winter and summer solstices.22

Page 393

The Pyramid Texts appear to contain several versions of this diagram. Moreover, as is so often the case with prehistoric myths which transmit hard astronomical data, the precessional symbolism is interwoven tightly with violent images of terrestrial destruction — as though to suggest that the 'breaking of the mill of heaven', that is the transition every 2160 years from one zodiacal age to another, could under ill-omened circumstances bring catastrophic influences to bear on terrestrial events.
Thus it was said that
Ra—Atum, the god who created himself, was originally king over gods and men together but mankind schemed against his sovereignty, for he began to grow old, his bones became silver, his flesh gold and his hair [as] lapis lazuli.23

When he realized what was happening, the ageing Sun God (so reminiscent of Tonatiuh, the bloodthirsty Fifth Sun of the Aztecs) determined that he would punish this insurrection by killing off most of the human race. The instrument of the havoc he unleashed was symbolized at times as a raging lioness wading in blood and at times as the fearsome lion-headed goddess Sekhmet who 'poured fire out of herself' and savaged mankind in an ecstasy of slaughter.24

The terrible destruction continued unabated for a long period. Then at last Ra intervened to save the lives of a 'remnant', the ancestors of present humanity. This intervention took the form of a flood which the lioness thirstily lapped up and then fell asleep. When she awoke, she was no longer interested in pursuing the destruction, and peace descended upon the devastated world.25

Meanwhile Ra had resolved to 'draw away' from what was left of his creation: 'As I live my heart is weary of staying with Mankind. I ban gone on killing them [almost] to the very last one, so the insignificant] remnant is not my affair . . . '26

Erasing messages from the past

Pyramid of the Sun, Teotihuacan
Having climbed more than 200 feet up a series of flights of stone stairs I reached the summit and looked towards the zenith. It was midday 19 May, and the sun was directly overhead, as it would be again on 25 /Page 190/ July. On these two dates, and not by accident, the west face of the pyramid was oriented precisely to the position of the setting sun.6

A more curious but equally deliberate effect could be observed on the equinoxes, 20 March and 22 September. Then the passage of the sun's rays from south to north resulted at noon in the progressive obliteration of a perfectly straight shadow that ran along one of the lower stages of the western facade. The whole process, from complete shadow to complete illumination, took exactly 66.6 seconds. It had done so without fail, year-in year-out, ever since the pyramid had been built and would continue to do so until the giant edifice crumbled into dust.7

What this meant, of course, was that at least one of the many functions of the pyramid had been to serve as a 'perennial clock', precisely signalling the equinoxes and thus facilitating calendar corrections as and when necessary for a people apparently obsessed, like the Maya, with the elapse and measuring of time. Another implication was that the master-builders of Teotihuacan must have possessed an enormous body of astronomic and geodetic data and referred to this data to set the Sun Pyramid at the precise orientation necessary to achieve the desired equinoctial effects.

The whole process, from complete shadow to complete illumination, took exactly 66.6 seconds.

Page 393

The Pyramid Texts appear to contain several versions of this diagram. Moreover, as is so often the case with prehistoric myths which transmit hard astronomical data, the precessional symbolism is interwoven tightly with violent images of terrestrial destruction — as though to suggest that the 'breaking of the mill of heaven', that is the transition every as6o years from one zodiacal age to another, could under ill-omened circumstances bring catastrophic influences to bear on terrestrial events.
Thus it was said that
Ra—Atum, the god who created himself, was originally king over gods and men together but mankind schemed against his sovereignty, for he began to grow old, his bones became silver, his flesh gold and his hair [as] lapis lazuli.'
When he realized what was happening, the ageing Sun God (so reminiscent of Tonatiuh, the bloodthirsty Fifth Sun of the Aztecs)
determined that he would punish this insurrection by killing off most of the human race. The instrument of the havoc he unleashed was symbolized at times as a raging lioness wading in blood and at times as the fearsome lion-headed goddess Sekhmet who 'poured fire out of herself' and savaged mankind in an ecstasy of slaughter.'
The terrible destruction continued unabated for a long period. ,
Then at last Ra intervened to save the lives of a 'remnant', the ,ancestors of present humanity. This intervention took the form of a flood which the lioness thirstily lapped up and then fell asleep. When she awoke, she was no longer interested in pursuing the destruction, and peace descended upon the devastated world.'
Meanwhile Ra had resolved to 'draw away' from what was left of his creation: 'As I live my heart is weary of staying with Mankind. I have gone on killing them [almost] to the very last one, so the [insignificant] remnant is not my affair . . . ,26

FINGERPRINTS OF THE GODS

A QUEST FOR THE BEGINNING AND THE END

Graham Hancock 1995

Ra—Atum, the god who created himself, was originally king over gods and men together but mankind schemed against his sovereignty, for he began to grow old, his bones became silver, his flesh gold and his hair [as] lapis lazuli.'

JOSEPH AND HIS BROTHERS

"For his bones gradually turned to silver, his flesh to gold, and his hair to genuine lapis lazuli"

It was a universally known fact that Re himself, the sun-god, had originally been King of the two lands, or rather ruler on earth over all men; and had ruled them with majestic brilliance and blessing so long as his years were still young, mature, or middle-aged, and even for some considerable period of time into his beginning and increas-ing age. But when he had got very old, and painful infirmities and frailties, though of course splendid in their form, approached the majesty of this god, he had found it good to withdraw from rhe earth and retire into the upper regions. For his bones gradually turned to silver, his flesh to gold, and his hair to genuine lapis lazuli, a very beautiful form of senescence, yet attended with all sorts of ailments and pains, for which the gods themselves had sought a thousand remedies but all in vain, since no herb that grows can avail against the diseases of gilding and silvering and lapidification, those troubles of advanced old age.

" To put it bluntly, somebody had been conspiring against Pharaoh's life - this although the days of the majesty of that elderly god were well known to be numbered anyhow, and it is common knowledge that their inclination to unite again with the sun could not be arrested either by the advice of the magicians and physicians of the book- house or even by the mediation of Ishtar of the Way, which His Majesty's brother and father-in-law of the Euphrates, Tustw-atta, King over Khanigalbat or Mitanniland, had solicitously sent to him. But that the Great House, Si-Re, Son of the Sun and Lord of the Two Crowns, Neb-ma-Re-Amenhotpe, was old and ailing and could scarcely breathe was no reason at all why he should not be conspired against; indeed, if you liked, it was a very good reason why he should, however dreadful, of course, such an enterprise remained.
For his bones gradually turned to silver, his flesh to gold, and his hair to genuine lapis lazuli, a very beautiful form of senescence, yet attended with all sorts of ailments and pains, for which the gods themselves had sought a thousand remedies but all in yain, since no herb that grows can avail against the diseases of gilding and silvering and lapidification, those troubles of advanced old age. Yet even under these circumstances the old Re had always clung to his earthly sovereignty although he must have seen that owing to his own weakness it had begun to relax, that he had ceased to be feared and even to be respected.
Now Isis, the Great One of the Island, Eset, a millionfold fertile in guile, felt that her moment was corne. Her wisdom embraced heaven and earth, like that of the superannuated old Re himself. But there was one thing she did not know or command, and the lack of it / Page 889 / hampered her: she did not know the last, most secret name of Re, his very final one, knowledge of which would give power over him. Re had very many names, each one more secret than the one before, yet not utterly hopeless to find out, save one, the very last and might-iest. That he still withheld; whoso could make him name it, he could compel him and outdistance him and put him under his feet.
Therefore Eset conceived and devised a serpent, which should sting Re in his golden flesh. Then the intolerable pain of the sting, which only great Eset could cure who made the worm, would force Re to tell her his name. Now as she contrived it, so was it fulfilled. The old Re was stung, and in torments was forced to come out with one of his secret names after another, always hoping that the. goddess would be satisfied before they got to the last one. But she kept on to the uttermost, until he had named her the very most secret of all, and the power of her knowledge over him was absolute. After that it cost her nothing to heal his wound; but he only got a little better, within the wretched limits in which so old a creature can; and soon thereafter he gave up and joined the great majority."

"The pre-eminent number in the code is 72.   To this is frequently added 36, making 108, and it is permissible to multiply 108 by 100 to get 10,800 or to  divide it by 2  to get  54, which may then be multiplied by 10 and expressed as 540  (or as 54,000, or as 540,000, or as 5,400,000, and so on).
Also  highly significant  is 2160 ( the number of years required for the equinoctial point to transit one zodiacal / Page 275 / constellation), which is sometimes multiplied by 10 and by factors of ten (to give 216,000, 2,160,000, and so on)" and sometimes by 2 to give 4320, or 43,200, or 432,000, or 4,320,000,ad infinitum."

"These he joined to the 360 days of which the year then consisted (emphasis added)."

"Elsewhere the myth informs us that the 360 -  day year  consists of  "12 months of 30 days each".
Note 6
And in general,as Sellers observes , "phrases are used which prompt simple mental calculations and an attention to numbers ". note 7
"Elsewhere the myth informs us that the 360-day year consists of  '12 months of 30 days each'.
Thus far we have been provided with three of Seller's precessional: 360, 12 and 30.  The fourth number, which occurs later in the text, is by far the most important.  As we saw in Chapter Nine, the evil deity known as Set led a group of conspirators in a plot to kill Osiris.  The number of these conspirators was 72."

"In all there were two-and-seventy conspirators privy to the plot. It was a proper and a pregnant number, for there had been just seventy-two when red Set lured Usir into the chest. And these seventy-two in their turn had had good cosmic ground to be no more and no less than that number. For it is just that number of groups of five weeks which make up the three hundred and sixty days of the year, not counting the odd days; and there are just seventy-two days in the dry fifth of the year, when the gauge shows that the Nourisher has reached his lowest ebb, and the god sinks into his grave. So where there is conspiracy anywhere in the world it is requisite and customary for the number of conspirators to be seventy-two. And if the plot fail, the failure shows that if this number had not been adhered to it would have failed even worse."

"...The ancient records dazed her small and scheming brain, so that she made up her mind to have Pharaoh stung by a serpent, to instigate a palace revolt and set on the throne of the two lands not Horus- Amenhotep, the rightful heir, who was sickly anyhow, but the fruit of her own womb, Noferka-Ptah.
The first steps toward the goal of overturning the dynasty, bring-ing in a new time and elevating the nameless near-favourite to the rank of goddess-mother had been successfully taken. The plot was hatched in Pharaoh's house of women; but through certain officials of the harem and certain officers of the guard who had been eager for new things, connections had been established, on the one hand with the palace itself, where a number of friends, some of them highly placed - a head charioteer of the god, the chief of gens-d'-armes, the steward of the fruit stores, the overseer of the King's herds of oxen, the head keeper of the Kings ointments, and certain other's - were won over for the enterprise; and on the other hand they got in touch with the outer world of the residential city, where through the officer's wives the male kindred of Pharaoh's graces were drawn in and engaged to stir up Wese's population with evil talk against the old Re, who by now was nothing at all but gold and silver and lapis lazuli.
In all there were two and seventy conspirators privy to the plot. And if the plot fail, the failure shows that if this number had not been adhered to it would have failed even worse.
Now the present plot did fail, although it had the benefit of the best models and all the preliminary steps had been taken with the greatest care. The head keeper of ungents had even succeeded in purloining a magic script out of Pharaoh's book-house and, follow-ing its instructions, had shaped certain little wax images; these were smuggled about here and there and were calculated to produce by magic a mental confusion and bewitchment such as must assure the success of the undertaking. It was decided to put poison in Pharaoh' bread or his wine or in both; and to use the ensuing confusion for a palace coup..."

Maat

Goddess of Truth and Justice
Maat.svg
Maat was both the goddess and the personification of truth and justice. Her ostrich feather represents truth.

The doctrine of Maat is represented in the declarations to Rekhti-merti-f-ent-Maat and the 42 Negative Confessions listed in the Papyrus of Ani. The following are translations by E. A. Wallis Budge.[27]

Assessors of Ma'at[edit]

"The Assessors of Ma'at" are the 42 deities listed in the Papyrus of Nebseni,[29] to whom the deceased make the Negative Confession in the Papyrus of Ani.[30] They represent the 42 united nomes of Egypt, and are called "the hidden Maati gods, who feed upon Maat during the years of their lives;" i.e., they are the righteous minor deities who deserve offerings.[27] As the deceased follows the set formula of Negative Confessions, he addresses each god directly and mentions the nome of which the god is a patron, in order to emphasize the unity of the nomes of Egypt.[29]

THE HIGH GOD IN THE AGE OF COFFIN TEXTS

I am Atum, the creator of the Eldest Gods,

I am he who gave birth to Shu,

I am that great He-She,

I am he who did what seemed good to him,

I took my space in the place of my will,

Mine is the space of those who move along

like those two serpentine circles.

"Shall any gazer see with mortal eyes,
Or any searcher know by mortal mind;
Veil after veil will lift-but there must be
Veil upon veil behind."

Prologue:
The Nine Gods

"In the beginning were the Nine gods of ancient Egypt, the Great Ennead, in whom all beauty, magic and power were personified. But although many, they were only ever truly One - each an aspect of the great creator god, Atum. The Pyramid Texts, hieroglyphic inscriptions found on the inside walls of seven pyramids of the Fifth and Sixth Dynasties, implore them both as Nine and as One:

O you, Great Ennead which is at On [Heliopolis] (namely) Atum, Shu, Tefnut, Geb, Nut, Osiris, Isis, Set, and Nepthys; O you children of Atum extend his goodwill to his child. . .1"

Atum's myth merged with that of the great sun god Re, giving rise to the deity Re-Atum. When distinguished from Re, Atum was the creators original form, living inside Nun, the primordial waters of chaos. At creation he emerged to engender himself and the gods. He was identified with the setting sun and was shown as an aged figure who had to be regenerated during the night, to appear as Khepri at dawn and as Re at the sun’s zenith.

THE DEATH OF FOREVER

A NEW FUTURE FOR HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS

Darryl Reanney 1991

Page 101

"The basis of our consciousness is cyclic and repetitive. After ten years of life, a child has experienced about 3650 day/night cycles. Its psychology has been totally and irreversibily structured in terms of this periodicity; it accepts unconsciously, instinctively, that light follows dark.

This periodic and reiterative structure of consciousness is encoded in our very speech. The latin prefix 're' usually has the sense /Page 102/ of 'again' Can it be coincidence that the words we use to describe our fundamental myths and activities are not things we do but things we do again?

reproduction redemption

representation reincarnation

recognition rebirth

resurrection

Even the word re-ligion may fit this pattern: one of its possible meanings is 'bind (join) again' . In the Christian tradition, we are told that Christ 'rose again from the dead', despite the fact that the resurrection of his body was supposedly an unique, once-off affair.

Taken together, these facts tell us something quite fundamental—that there is a natural and inevitable association between the concept of an afterlife and the enduring legacy of cyclic time. Far from being an innovation or an invention, the religious idea of rebirth, of life (light) after death (dark), is an expression of one of the oldest aspects of life on earth. Most 'higher' creatures exhibit daily circadian rhythmns (from Latin circa meaning about, die meaning day)."

THE SIRIUS MYSTERY

Page 24

The fact is demonstrated, and it is that the Dogon have an accurate general knowledge of the most unobvious and subtle principles of the orbiting of Sirius B around Sirius A.

The Dogon also know the actual orbital period of this invisible star, which is fifty years. Referring to the sacred Sigui ceremony of the tribe, Dieterlen and Griaule tell us : 'The period of the orbit is counted double, that is, one hundred years, because the Siguis are convened in pairs of "twins", so as to insist on the principle of twin-ness'.

The Dogon also say that Sirius B rotates on its axis, demonstrating that they know a star can do such a thing. In reality, all stars really do rotate on their axes. How do the Dogon know such an extraordinary fact? In the article, the Dogon are recorded as saying : 'As well as its movement in space, Digitaria also revolves upon itself over the period of one year and this revolution is honoured during the celebration of the bado rite'. It is not known to modern astronomy what the period of rotation of Sirius B is; the star is so small we think we are doing well to see it at all. I asked one astronomer, G. Wegner, of Oxford's Department of Astrophysics and the University Observatory, whether one year might be a sensible estimate of the rotation period of Sirius B. He naturally replied that we had no way of determining it, but that a year could be right; in other words, it cannot be ruled out, which was all I was seeking to establish.

The Dogon describe Sirius B as 'the infinitely tiny'. As we know, Sirius B is a white dwarf and the tiniest form of visible star in the universe. But what is really the most amazing of all the Dogon statements is this : The star which is considered to be the smallest thing in the sky is also the heaviest: "Digitaria is the smallest thing there is. It is the heaviest star." It consists of a metal called sagala which is a little brighter than iron and so heavy "that all earthly beings combined cannot lift it". In effect the star weighs the equivalent of . . . all the seeds, or of all the iron on the earth . . .' (all this from the following article by Griaule and Dieterlen).

GOD ON DOG ON

So we see the Dogon presenting a theory of Sirius B which fits all known scientific facts, and even some which are not known it presents as well. They know that the star is invisible, but they know it is there nevertheless. They know that the star's orbital period is fifty years, which it really is. They know that Sirius A is not at the centre of its orbit, which it is not. They know that Sirius A is at one of the foci of Sirius B's elliptical orbit, which it is. They know that Sirius B is the smallest kind of star, which it is (barring totally invisible collapsing neutron stars). They know that Sirius B is composed of a special kind of material which is called sagala, from a root meaning 'strong', and that this material does not exist on the earth. They know that this material is heavier than all the iron on earth, etc., all of which is perfectly true. For /Page 26/ Sirius B is in realitymade of super dense matter of a kind which exists nowhere on earth.

"They know that the star's orbital period is fifty years"

THE SIRIUS MYSTERY

Was Earth visited by intelligent beings from a planet in the system of the Star Sirius

Robert K.G. Temple 1976

A

FAIRYTALE

Page 64 / seen.) But I must confess that I was not prepared to discover this following passage :11
On the subject of Anubis Plutarch reports (44;60 some interesting beliefs. After referring to the view that Anubis was born of Nephthys, although Isis was his reputed mother, he goes on to say, 'By Anubis they understand the horizontal circle, which divides the invisible part of the world, which they call Nephthys, from the visible, to which they give the name of Isis; and as this circle equally touches upon the confines of both light and darkness, it may be looked upon as common to them both — and from this circumstance arose that resemblance, which they imagine between Anubis and the Dog, it being observed of this animal, that he is equally watchful as well by day as night.
This description could be taken to be one of the Sirius system. It clearly describes Isis (whom we know to have been identified with Sirius) as 'the confines of light' and 'the visible', and her sister Nephthys is described as being 'the confines of darkness' and 'the invisible', and common to both is the horizontal circle which divides them — the horizontal circle described, perhaps, by the orbit of the dark companion about the bright star? And here, too, is an explanation of the symbolism of the dog which has always been associated with Sirius, which has borne throughout the ages the name of the 'Dog Star'.
Anubis is variously represented as jackal-headed and dog-headed in Egyptian art. Wallis Budge adds:12 'Thus much, however, is certain, that in ancient times the Egyptians paid the greatest reverence and honour to the Dog. . .
Anubis was also variously represented as the son of Nephthys by Osiris and as being really identical with Osiris himself. A famous tale has him embalm the corpse of Osiris. Osiris was known as Anubis, though, at Oxyrhynchus and Cynopolis.13
A name similar to Anubis (which is really Anpu in Egyptian) and which is also associated with Isis-Sothis (Sirius), is Anukis, a fellow-goddess of Sothis who, along with the goddess Satis, sails in the same celestial boat with Sothis in the Egyptian paintings. There are thus the three goddesses together, possibly a description of Sirius A, Sirius B, and Sirius C, and emphasizing that the Sirius system is really thought to be a three-star system. Just to underline the point, Neugebauer specifically states:14 'The goddess Satis, who like her companion Anukis is hardly to be taken as a separate constellation but rather as an associate of Sothis.'
The goddess Anukis holds two jars from which she pours water, possibly indicating two watery planets around her star? All the references to the Sothic heavens are to a watery, reed-growing paradise. Many archaeologists have surmised that this refers to some specifically Egyptian locale. But no one is sure. What is known is that heaven is almost invariably associated with the Sirius system and is described as being prolific of vegetation and watery.
In Plutarch's famous and lengthy treatise (from his immense work the Moralia, which is even longer than his Lives), 'Isis and Osiris' (356) we read: `. . . Isis was born in the regions that are ever moist.' In the Loeb Library edition of this, the translator F. C. Babbitt adds a footnote at this point saying: `The meaning is doubtful. . . In other words, no one is really sure what is /Page 65/ meant by all these references to Isis-Sothis and the 'moist regions', which are supposed by most scholars quite sensibly to be projections of local Egyptian conditions around the Nile into an ideal celestial region. But most scholars admit that this is mere conjecture. The 'moist regions' could just as well be an attempt to describe some watery planets.
It is worth pointing out that in the event of planets in the Sirius system being watery, we must seriously consider the possibility of intelligent beings
from there being amphibious. This ties in with the legend of Oannes which I mentioned in Part One. He was the amphibious being mentioned by the astronomer Carl Sagan from the Sumerian tradition, and was the bringer of civilization to man. In other words, beings of this type would be a bit like mermaids and mermen — and might in some way resemble our intelligent friends the dolphins. I discuss this subject further in Part Three of this book.
Perhaps 'the sirens' are, figuratively, a chorus of mermaids recalled from earlier times. By coincidence, in zoology a siren is 'one of a genus (Siren) of eel-shaped
amphibians having small forelimbs, but destitute of hind legs and pelvis, and having permanent external gills as well as lungs'. It would be interesting to see how far back in time these creatures were called by their name. As for the singing sirens who lure sailors to the rocks, they are called in Greek Seirin (singular), Seirenes (plural) and are first mentioned in Homer's Odyssey. Homer knew of two sirens, but later there was a third, and some added a fourth. (Plato decided there were eight because of that number matching the number of musical notes in the octave.) It is interesting that in Greek Sirius is Seirios. Liddell and Scott in their definitive Greek lexicon give a meaning of the previous Seiren as 'a constellation, like Seirios, Eust. 1709. 54'.
Another similar word Seistron became in Latin sistrum and Liddell and Scott define it as 'A rattle used in the worship of Isis.

Let us now turn our attention to a remarkable book, Star Names, Their Lore and Meaning by Richard Hinckley Allen. In this book, under a discussion
of the constellation Canis Major (The Dog), which contains Sirius,15 on p. 130, is a description of the star of the constellation represented by the Greek letter 8 (delta) :
It is the 'modern Wezen, from (the Arabic) Al Wazn, Weight, "as the star seems to rise with difficulty from the horizon," but Ideler calls this an astonishing star-name.'
Yes, concerning what we know, it is astonishing!
Before leaving the star, it is worth noting that Allen says the Chinese knew it as well as some stars in Argo as `floo She, the Bow and Arrow', and that the
bow and arrow is a variation motif associated with the Sirius system by the Egyptians. In Neugebauer we read:16 'The goddess Satis, who like her companion Anukis is hardly to be taken as a separate constellation but rather as an associate of Sothis. In Dendera B, the goddess holds a drawn bow and arrow.'
More information regarding Al Wazn, 'Weight', is found in Dr Christian Ludwig Ideler's Untersuchungen ueber den Ursprung and die Bedeutung der Sternnamen,
Berlin, 1809, which Allen describes as 'the main critical compendium of information on stellar names — Arabic, Greek, and Latin especially. It is to him that we owe the translation of the original Arabic text of Kazwini's Description of the Constellations, written in the 13th century, which forms the / Page 66 / basis of the Sternnamen, with Ideler's additions and annotations from classical and other sources. From this much information in my book is derived.'
Ideler might well comment that Al Wazn is 'an astonishing star-name'. To call a star in the same constellation as Sirius 'too heavy to rise over the horizon with ease' looks suspiciously like an attempt to describe a 'heavy star' such as Sirius B.

Could this reference to a 'heavy star' be a reference to Sirius B by people who have inherited a slightly garbled version of the tradition of its being a super-dense star invisible to the unaided eye — resulting in their seizing on one of Sirius's apparent companions (as seen from the Earth) and giving it a description properly applying to its actual companion ? The Arabs do not mention '480 ass loads' to describe its weight in the quaint fashion of the Dogon, but the substance of the idea seems to be present. It is well known that ancient Arabic astronomical lore derives from Egypt and is found in Arabic traditions in a degenerate form. Obviously the search must now be on for this concept of a super-heavy star in Egyptian traditions! I had always suspected that this most secret tradition of the Dogon reached them from Egypt, just as the lore of stars reached the Arabs from Egypt. It will not be easy for us to discover, as it must have been an extremely esoteric and secret teaching of the Egyptians, just as it was the most secret teaching of the Dogon.

A further use of the name Wazn is its loose application to the star Canopus in the constellation Argo.17 Allen, in describing the Argo, quotes the ancient Greek poet Aratos, in a passage showing us something of the relation Argo bears to Canis Major, the Great Dog:

Sternforward Argo by the Great Dog's tail Is drawn . . .

Argo is the constellation representing both Jason's ship with its fifty Argonauts and Noah's ark.

JASON 59 JASON

JASON 23 JASON

JASON 5 JASON

Jason's Argo 'carried Danaos with his fifty daughters from Egypt to Rhodes', as Allen puts it. He adds: 'The Egyptian story said that it was the ark that bore Isis and Osiris over the deluge; while the Hindus thought that it performed the same office for their equivalent Isi and Iswara.'

Allen's old-fashioned spelling `Iswara' is a reference to the word `Ishvara,'. There are some interesting facts to be gleaned from perusing the meanings of the Sanskrit word ishu, which basically means 'an arrow'. Recall the connection of the bow and arrow with Sirius among both the Egyptians and the Chinese. (Further examples are given in the book Hamlet's Mill, along with interesting illustrations.) Now note from Monier-Williams's definitive Sanskrit dictionary that ishu means not only 'arrow' but 'ray of light'. Ishvasa means 'a bow' or `an archer'. Remember the three goddesses and note this: that Ishustrikanda, which literally means 'the threefold arrow', is specifically meant to be the name of a constellation ! Monier-Williams says it is 'perhaps the girdle of Orion' (which has three prominent stars). The interested reader must refer to Hamlet's Mill by Santillana and von Dechend for a great deal of discussion of Sirius the Bow Star.

Page 66 (Continued)

But to return to the celestial Argo-boat (or ark) ; we have previously encountered this Egyptian idea of the celestial boats in which their gods sailed /Page 67/ through the waters of the heavens. The three Sirius-goddesses: Sothis, Anukis, and Satis, were all in the same boat. So it is interesting to see that Argo was a boat connected with Isis and Osiris, for a concept which seems to be peculiarly stubborn in attaching itself to Argo is the number fifty. It is my suspicion that this is a remnant of the concept of Sirius B taking fifty years to complete an orbit around Sirius A. This suggestion is not as far-fetched as it may seem at first sight. Indeed, the reader will discover as he proceeds that the suggestion will become more and more obvious. We must realize that in Egyptian terms the orbit of Sirius B around Sirius A could have been expressed in terms of a celestial boat. Now since Argo is the boat of Isis and Osiris, what better way to express the fifty-year orbit than by giving the boat fifty oarsmen? And that is what Argo has — in the tradition there are fifty rowers, or Argonauts.

In order to fortify my argument I shall quote Allen's precise way of describing this :18 'Mythology insisted that it was built by Glaucus, or by Argos, for Jason, leader of the fifty Argonauts, whose number equalled that of the oars of the ship . . .'

In other words, it is not the men but the number of oars laid out in line round the ship that is important. A ship (an orbit) with fifty oars (fifty 'markers' or yearly stages)! And just so that we don't miss the importance of the figure fifty, we are told there were fifty daughters of Danaus transported from Egypt on the Argo! (Readers who wonder what other connection there may be between the Argo of the Greeks and ancient Egypt must be patient.) Argo is therefore totally involved in the picture, as we now see. There are many further ramifications of this, not only of Argo, but of the number fifty.

But before moving on to what that entails, it is worth giving an illustration of the concept of 'the rower' in the celestial barque from an ancient Egyptian
coffin text 'The Field of Paradise'.19 It is quite likely that from concepts such as these the idea of a rower and his oar developed and became incorporated in the Argo myth and came to be symbolic: `. . . in the place where Re (the Sun) sails with rowing. I am the keeper of the halyard in the boat of the god; I am the oarsman who does not weary in the barque of Re.' (Re is another form of the more familiar Ra.)
The first person in this text refers to the deceased Pharaoh. This is one of the examples of the common Egyptian conception that when a Pharaoh died he became a celestial rower. It should be obvious, then, how the concept of `fifty rowers' by fifty positions, or oars, came to be important as symbols. It harks back to this Egyptian motif.

Now we must turn to the Sumerian civilization (which later developed into the Babylonian civilization). We shall be back in Egypt soon enough, with more Argo material. But we must go east. Sumer-Akkad was roughly contemporaneous with ancient Egypt, and the lands are known to have been in contact. In a major source we read 20 of the Sumerian word Magan: 'The land Magan is usually identified either with Arabia or with Egypt.'
But whatever contact the two civilizations may have had, we must first investigate the Sumerian religion and mythology. For this we rely primarily
on the excellent work of Samuel Noah Kramer of the University of Pennsylvania. The Sumerian heaven-god is called Anu. (In Sanskrit anupa means 'a watery county'.) I had a considerable shock when I discovered that Alexander Heidel says in The Babylonian Genesis: `. . . just as the departed spirits of..../Page 68/ Enlil and Anu were pictured as the wild ass and the jackal, respectively'.21 Anu is represented by the jackal. Well, of course, the jackal is the sylabol (interchangeable with the dog) of the Egyptian Anpu (Anubis) !
I shall explain later why I consider Anu to be related to the Sirius question, apart from this obvious parallel. At the moment I shall deal with further related parallels which I consider amazing. Anu is the king of some attendant deities called the Anunnaki. We shall shortly see why they are so involved in the Sirius question. But note the recurrence in Sumer of 'Amu' in both Anu and the Anunnaki, and in Egypt with both Anpu (Anubis) and Anukis. In all these cases Sirius is involved. Even the jackal or dog is common as a symbol to the `Ante in both countries. There are other parallels, but we shall come to them in due course.
In Sumerian the word an means 'heaven' and Anu is the god of heaven. Wallis Budge says22 that the Egyptian god Nu was often identified with Nut, which is 'heaven'.
Significantly, he expressly states:23
It is surprising therefore to find so much similarity existing between the primeval gods of Sumer and those of Egypt, especially as the resemblance cannot be the result of borrowing. It is out of the question to assume that Ashur-banipal's editors borrowed the system from Egypt, or that the literary men of the time of Seti I borrowed their ideas from the literati of Babylonia or Assyria, and we are therefore driven to the conclusion that both the Sumerians and the early Egyptians derived their primeval gods from some common but exceedingly ancient source. The similarity between the two companies of gods seems to be too close to be accidental . . . it is certain that the company of primeval gods . . . was quite different from . . . those which formed in Babylonia and Assyria when these countries were inhabited by Semitic populations.
I had come to all these conclusions myself before seeing this passage by Wallis Budge.
But to return to Anu. Osiris is sometimes known as An.24 In a hymn to Osiris25 he is called the 'god An of millions of years . . .' and also 'An in An-tes, Great One, lieru-khuti, thou stridest over heaven with long strides'. Therefore this designation as An is specifically connected with heaven and the long strides mean heavenly motion.
In considering An and Anu we must look again at Anubis. But as we do so we shall take a glance at the Sanskrit. Recall that Anubis in Plutarch's account seemed to refer specifically to the orbit of Sirius B. In Sanskrit the word alga means 'ellipse', and the word atzu means 'minute, atomic, "the subtle one", an atom of matter' and animan means 'minuteness, atomic nature, the smallest particle, the superhuman power of becoming as small as an atom'. The first word could describe an orbit. Since Kepler, we have known that our planets move in elliptical orbits rather than circular ones, and the orbit of Sirius B is that of an ellipse. As for the next two forms atm and animan, they seem to have meanings perilously peripheral to an account of that level of matter (the atomic) where the nature of Sirius B is manifested. We shall see much later in the book that other similarities exist between certain Sanskrit terms relevant to the Sirius /Page 69/ question and like terms in Egypt and the Near East.

THE SIRIUS MYSTERY

THE RISING OF 'SERPENT'S TOOTH'

SUMMARY

Page 198

In ancient Egyptian, the hieroglyph and word for `goddess' also means 'serpent'. The hieroglyph for Sirius also means 'tooth'. Hence 'serpent's tooth' is a pun on 'the goddess Sirius'. In the Argo story, Jason sowed the 'serpent's teeth', an idea which must originally have stemmed from this Egyptian pun. The Greek word for 'the rising of a star' also refers to 'the growing of teeth from the gum'. Therefore when the serpent's teeth were sown in the ground, they grew up from it as from a gum — that is, the star Sirius (`serpent's tooth') rose over the horizon.
Thus we see the mythological code language of sacred puns in operation. Behind the myths lay concealed meanings which are decipherable by returning to the hieroglyphics and finding synonyms which form puns.
We find explanations of the words Argo, Ark, Argos, etc., by looking for Egyptian origins. These words derive from the Egyptian word arq. But related words in Greek give clues as well: Argus was a dog connected with a cycle. Another Argus had one hundred eyes and watched over Io, who is connected with the Sirius traditions and Isis. The Egyptian word arqi refers to an end of a cycle, represented in the Odyssey by Argus. The Egyptian word arq refers to a circular concept and is the origin of the Latin arcere and of our arc.
A temple of Isis found in southern Italy has in its inner sanctum a painting of hundred-eyed Argus (portrayed, however, with a normal face and eyes). The mysteries of Isis were celebrated in this inner sanctum. Also the fifty daughters of Danaos traditionally brought from Egypt to Greece (and hence southern Italy) the mysteries of the Thesmophoria which according to Plutarch were Isis mysteries. So we see Isis connected intimately at the most secret and sacred levels with 'fifty' and 'one hundred' (Hekate) and Isis was identified with Sirius.
The earliest Egyptians believed Sirius was the home of departed souls, which the Dogon also believe. The Egyptians said that when a deceased spirit 'went to Nephthys' he revolved 'in the horizon' and 'revolves like the sun'. This is a pretty specific description of the dark Nephthys as a 'sun' revolving around Sirius.
The Egyptians also maintained that emanations from the region of Sirius vivified creatures on Earth. This, too, is believed by the Dogon.
Since the Egyptians believed Sirius was the other world of departed souls, it is interesting that they called 'the other world arq-betttt, using the familiar word arq again.
In Egyptian the region of Sirius is described by a word meaning also 'throne' and `weight' and similar to a word meaning 'dwarf'.
The Egyptian word meaning 'fifty' (from which are derived the Arabic and Hebrew words meaning 'fifty') referred to the fifty hot 'Dog Days' of Sirius and also to 'a star that rests not' — obviously a moving star, namely Sirius B with its fifty-year orbit.

Page 199

Sirius in Egypt is 'the Bow Star'. The Egyptian word for 'bowman' refers also to a heavy star metal connected with Anubis (which we have previously suggested refers to the orbit of Sirius B, which is, after all, made of 'heavy star metal'). The word for heavy star metal is similar to the words for 'dwarf' and 'weight'.
The Egyptian word for 'the beginning of a cycle' (which would join up with arg meaning 'the end of a cycle') means also 'oracle' and 'the front and hind tips of a ship' — a vindication of my oracle-Argo. The same word also means 'the base of a triangle' (and the word for 'triangle' is a variation of the name for Sirius, whose hieroglyph is a triangle). We also have geodetic triangles, connected with the ark, from Thebes and Behdet.
Plutarch gives an account of a Persian description of the Dog Star Sirius, which is said to be surrounded by fifty gods forming the shape of an egg (elliptical orbit) in which the 'light god' faces the 'dark god.'
In the Biblical Book of Leviticus, Moses commands the Hebrews to observe a Jubilee every fifty years, but I have never heard of their doing so. Obviously the Hebrews did not understand the fifty-year orbit of Sirius B which Moses (who was an initiate of Egypt and 'raised by Pharoah') presumably had in mind.
In Egyptian the word for 'the secret horizon' also means 'the two spirits' — namely, the light Isis and the dark Nephthys. The same word also means 'the god who dwelleth in the horizon' and 'Isis as Sirius'. The secret horizon would seem to refer to the orbit of Sirius B in which Sirius B lives.
The Egyptian word for 'dog' also means 'tooth' (the triangle hieroglyph meaning `Sirius' and `tooth'), and also means specifically 'clog-god' and also 'one ht.ndred'.
Another Egyptian word meaning 'tooth' means `to traverse a path in steps' and `to make strong', and is used in connection with Anubis in such a way that could be 'the counter of months while traversing the path'. A synonym means 'one hundred' and `Sirius'. We thus have: 'counting one hundred months while traversing the Sirius path'. But Anubis who does this is 'a circle'. So we have: 'counting one hundred months while traversing the circular Sirius path'. Change months to years (as Moses might have done ?) and we have two fifty-year orbital periods of Sirius B.
We see that the ancient Egyptians had the same Sirius tradition which we have encountered from the Dogon tribe in Mali. We know that the Dogon are cultural, and probably also physical, descendants of Lemnian Greeks who claimed descent 'from the Argonauts', went to Libya, migrated westwards as Garamantians (who were described by Herodotus), were driven south, and after many, many centuries reached the River Niger in Mali and intermarried with local Negroes.
The Dogon preserve as their most sacred mystery tradition one which was brought from pre-dynastic Egypt by `Danao3' to the Greeks who took it to Libya and thence eventually to Mali, and which concerns 'the Sirius mystery'. We have thus traced back to pre-dynastic Egypt well before 3000 B.C. the extraordinary knowledge of the system of the stars Sirius A, Sirius B, and possible 'Sirius C' possessed by the Dogon.
We have thus managed to rephrase, if not to answer, the Sirius question. It is no longer: 'How did the Dogon know these things ?' It is now: 'How did the pre-dynastic Egyptians before 3200 B.C. or their (unknown) predecessors know these things ?'
What is the answer to the Sirius question? We do not know. But knowing the right questions is essential to an eventual understanding of anything. The many investigations which should properly follow upon the asking of the Sirius question may give us more answers than we could at present imagine.
Archaeologists have a difficult task trying to explain the many similarities between Sumer and Egypt, indicating some still undiscovered common origin for the two cultures — an entirely forgotten civilization whose remains must exist somewhere.
But in considering the very origins of the elements of what we can call human civilization on this planet, we should now take fully into account the possibility that primitive / Page 200/ Stone Age men were handed civilization on a platter by visiting extraterrestrial beings, who left traces behind them for us to decipher. These traces concerned detailed information about the system of the star Sirius which is only intelligible to a society as technologically advanced as ours today. Today was the time when we were meant to discover these coded facts, I feel sure. Today is the time we should prepare ourselves to face the inevitable reality that extraterrestrial civilizations exist, and are in all probability far more advanced in culture than we ourselves — not to mention in technology which could enable them to travel between the stars !
It may be difficult for us to avoid seriously entertaining that most disturbing and also exciting of notions: that intelligent beings from elsewhere in the galaxy have already visited Earth, already know of our existence, may possibly be monitoring us at this moment with a robot probe somewhere in our solar system, and may have the intention of returning in person some day to see how the civilization they established is really getting on.

Tilmun: Land of the Rocketships

" The epic search of Gilgamesh for Immortality has undoubtedly been the fountainhead of the many tales and legends, in subsequent millenia, of kings and heroes who have likewise gone to find everlasting youth. Somewhere on Earth, Mankind's mythified memories held, there was a place where Man could join the gods, and be spared the indignity of death.
Nearly 5,000 years ago, Gilgamesh of Uruk had pleaded with Utu (Shamash):

In my city, man dies; oppressed is my heart.
Man perishes; heavy is my heart. . .
Man, the tallest, cannot stretch to Heaven. . .
O Utu,
The Land I wishto enter; be thou my ally. . .
In the place where the Shems have been raised up, Let me set up my Shem!

The Shem, we have shown, though commonly translated "Name" (that by which one is remembered), was in fact a rocketship: Enoch vanished upon his "Name" as he was taken heavenward. Half a millenium after Gilgamesh, in Egypt, King Teti made an almost identical plea:

Men fall,
They have no Name.
(O god),
Seize thou King Teti by his arms, Take thou King Teti to the sky,That he die not on Earth among men.

The goal of Gilgamesh was Tilmun, the land where the rocketships were raised up. To ask where he went to reach Tilmun, is to ask where Alexander went, deeming himself a Pharaoh and a god's son. It is to ask: Where on Earth was the Duat?
Because all these destinations, we must conclude, were one and the same."

GREAT PHILOSOPHIES OF THE EAST

E. W. F. Tomlin 1952

Page 179

"The exposition of the principles of Karma Yoga leads Krishna to explain how so great a wisdom, though preached from the beginning of time has been neglected. The evil instincts of men, by mistaking the senses for organs of true knowledge, have obscured the knowledge of Brahman. For this reason Krishna is obliged from time to time to visit the world in bodily form. But unlike Arjuna who has also experienced many forms of existence, Krishna is endowed with the capacity to remember each of his incarnations. 'I seem to be born,' he says, 'but it is only seeming.' Only when evil appears to be gaining the upper hand, 'I make myself a body,' (We are given to understand that Krishna's human embodiment at this time represented the eighth incarnation of Vishnu.) He then issues his first clear statement of his mission as the saviour of mankind: 'He who knows the nature of my task and my holy birth Is not reborn. When he leaves this body he comes to me. Flying from fear, From lust and anger, he hides in me, His refuge, his safety: Burnt clean in the blaze of my being, In me many find home. Whatever wish men bring me in worship, That wish I grant them. Whatever path men travel Is my path: No matter where they walk It leads to me.' He then sums up his teaching about action in a fashion that, though paradoxical, contains truth even on a lower level than that of which he speaks, 'He who sees the inaction that is in action, and the action that is in inaction is wise indeed.'

WESTERN MYSTICISM

Dom Cuthbert Butler 1922

"In this 'divine inaction' (passim1) the soul hath lost the free disposal of her own faculties, acting by a portion of the spirit above all faculties, and according to the actual touches of the Divine Spirit and apprehending God with an exclusion of all conceptions and apprehensions ... and is immediately united to God (ibid. p. 545).

1 'Divine inaction means God's action in the soul.

IV. THE GURU AND SHISHYA (OR CHELA) AND INITIATIONS

"Very frequently the Bardo Thodol directs the dying or the deceased to concentrate mentally upon, or to visualize, his tutelary deity or else hisspiritual guru, and, at other times, to recollect the teachings conveyed to him by his human guru, more especially at the time of the mystic initiation. Yogis and Tantrics ordinarily comment upon such ritualistic directions by saying that there exist three lines of gurus to whom reverence and worship are to be paid. The first and highest is purely superhuman, called in Sanskrit divyaugha, meaning . heavenly (or "divine ") line'; the second is of the most highly developed human beings, possessed of supernormal
/ Page 223 / or siddhic powers, and hence called siddhaugha; the third is of ordinary religious teachers and hence called manavaugha, 'human line'.1
Women as well as men, if qualified, may be gurus. The shihsya is, as a rule, put on probation for one year before receiving the first initiation. If at the end of that time he proves to be an unworthy receptacle for the higher teachings, he is rejected. Otherwise, he is taken in hand by the guru and carefully prepared for psychical development. A shihsya when on probation is merely commanded to perform such and such exercises as are deemed suitable to his or her particular needs. Then, when the probation ends, the shihsya is told by the guru the why of the exercises, and the final results which are certain to come from the exercises when successfully carried out. Ordinarily, once a guru is chosen, the shihsya has no right to disobey the guru, or to take another guru until it is proven that the first guru can guide the shihsya no further. If the shihsya develops rapidly, because of good karma, and arrives at a stage of development equal to that of the guru, the guru, if unable to guide the shihsya  further, will probably himself direct theshihsya to a more advanced guru.
For initiating a shihsya, the guru must first prepare himself, usually during a course of special ritual exercises occupying several days, whereby the guru, by 'invoking the gift-waves of the divine line of gurus, sets up direct communication with the spiritual plane on which the divine gurus exist. If the human guru be possessed of siddhic powers, this communion is believed to be as real as wireless or telepathic communication between two human beings on the earth-plane.
The actual initiation, which follows, consists of giving to the shishya the secret mantra, or Word of Power, whereby at-one-ment is brought about between the shihsya, as the new member of the secret brotherhood, and the Supreme Guru / Page 224 /
who stands to all gurus and shishyas under him as the Divine Father. The vital-force, or vital-airs (prana-vayu), serve as a psycho-physical link uniting the human with the divine; and the vital-force, having been centred in the Seventh Psychic-Centre, or Thousand-petalled Lotus, by exercise of the awakened Serpent-Power, through that Centre, as through a wireless receiving station, are received the spiritual gift-waves of the Supreme guru. Thus is the divine grace received into the human organism and made to glow, as electricity is made to glow when conducted to the vacuum of an electric bulb; and the true initiation is thereby conferred and the shishya Illuminated.
In the occult language of the Indian and Tibetan Mysteries, the communication sits enthroned in the peri carp of the Thousand-petalled Lotus. Thither, by the power of the Serpent Power of the awakened Goddess Kundalini, the shishya, guided by the human guru, is led, and bows down at the feet of the Divine Father, and receives the blessing and the bene-diction. The Veil of Maya has been lifted, and the Clear Light shines into the heart of the shishya unobstructedly. As one Lamp is lit by the Flame of another Lamp, so the Divine Power is communicated from the Divine Father, the communication, to the newly-born one, the human shishya.
The secret mantra conferred at the initiation, like the Egyptian Word of Power, is the Password necessary for a conscious passing from the embodied state into the disembodied state. If the initiate is sufficiently developed spiritually before the time comes for the giving up of the gross physical body at death, and can at the moment of quitting the earth-plane remember the mystic mantra, or Word of Power, the change will take place without loss of consciousness; nor will the shishya of full development suffer any break "in the continuity of consciousness from incarnation to incarnation."

"There is no such word in Sanscrita as 'Creation' applied to the universe. The Sanscrita word for Creation is Shristi, which means 'projection' Creation means to bring something into being out /Page 9/ of nothing, to create, as a novelist creates a character. There was no Miranda, for example, until Shakespeare created her. Similarly the ancient Indians (this term is innacurately used as there was no India at that time). who were our ancestors long, long ago. used a word for creation that means 'projection'

No More Water: the Fire Next Time - Bible Watchman

www.biblewatchman.com/nomorewat.htm

God gave Noah the rainbow sign,. No more water, the fire next time. And we are living in the end times and this truth is about to come upon the whole world.

No More Water: The Fire Next Time

“Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished; But the heavens and the earth, which are new, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men” - (2Pet.3:6,7).

This song was taken from the Bible by a black slave:

God gave Noah the rainbow sign,

No more water, the fire next time.

System frequency is a continuously changing variable that is determined and controlled by the second-by-second (real time) balance between system demand and total generation. If demand is greater than generation, the frequency falls while if generation is greater than demand, the frequency rises.

THE AGE OF FABLE

Thomas Bullfinch

1994

Page 353/4

"Pythagorus considered numbers as the essence and / principle of all things, and attributed to them a real and distinct existence; so that, in his view, they were the elements out of which the universe was constructed. How he conceived this process has never been satis-factorily explained. He traced the various forms and phenomena of the world to numbers as their basis and essence. The" Monad" or unit he regarded as the source of all numbers. The number Two was imperfect, and the cause of increase and division. Three was called the number of the whole because it had a beginning, middle, and end. Four, representing the square, is in the highest degree perfect; and Ten, as it contains the sum of the four prime numbers, comprehends all musical and arithmetical proportions, and denotes the system of the world.
As the numbers proceed from the monad, so he re-garded the pure and simple essence of the Deity as the source of all the forms of nature. Gods, demons, and heroes are emanations of the Supreme, and there is a fourth emanation, the human soul. This is immortal, and when freed from the fetters of the body passes to the habitation of the dead, where it remains till it returns to the world, to dwell in some other human or animal body, and at last, when sufficiently purified, it returns to the source from which it pro-ceeded. This doctrine of the transmigration of souls (metempsychosis), which was originally Egyptian and connected with the doctrine of reward and punishment of human actions, was the chief cause why the Pythagoreans killed no animals. Ovid represents Pythagoras addressing his disciples in these words: "Souls never die, but always on quitting one abode pass to another".

ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS

Compiled by Charles Legge

QUESTION

Are there any languages that do not use or require punctuation?

HISTORICALLY, the character-based scripts of East Asia did not use punctuation. For instance, in China punctuation was introduced only in the 20th century at the instigation of educational reformists led by the scholar Hu Shih (1891-1962).
By the time Hu Shih began his schooling, traditional Chinese education had become a rigid orthodoxy, remote from contemporary life and learning. It was based on the Confucian Classics and on a narrow interpretation of them introduced by the reigning Ch'ing (Manchu) dynasty to justify monarchical rule.
Hu Shih attended Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. After receiving his BA degree in 1914, he became a student of the philosopher John Dewey at Columbia University before returning to China in 1917 after completing his doctorate.
Despite the high hopes engendered by the Chinese Revolution of 1911, which abolished the monarchy and established a Western-style republic, Hu found a China that had not radically changed from the nation he had left seven years earlier.
He pushed for Western education reforms, and his Outline Of The History Of Chinese Philosophy (1919) became the first Chinese book to use punctuation. Its use eventually became widespread, although classical writing and poetry still do not use punctuation.
While many other character-based scripts such as Korean and Japanese followed suit, Thai did not. Indeed, the Thai language has no orthography, i.e. no sentences, no capitalisations, no spaces between words, punctuation and often little evidence of paragraphs, although occasionally a gap is introduced in the script to indicate a pause, the equivalent of a comma or full stop.

Steven Lomas, Manchester.

SACRED GEOMETRY

CIRCLING THE SQUARE

the marriage of heaven and earth

The circle is the shape traditionally assigned to the Heavens, and the square to the Earth. When these two shapes are unified by being made equal in area or perimeter we speak of 'squaring the circle', meaning that Heaven and Earth, or Spirit and Matter, are symbolically combined, or married. Fivefold Man exists between sixfold Heaven and fourfold Earth and Leonardo da Vinci's image opposite also shows how a man's span equals his height, that this measure equals seven of his feet and other important ratios.
Amazingly, the Earth and the Moon square the circle, for if the Moon (diameter 3) is drawn down to the Earth (diameter II) then a heavenly circle through the Moon (dotted below centre) has radius 7, and so circumference 44, the same as the perimeter of the square around the Earth. This works because irjelating the circumference of a circle to its diameter is practically 22/7. In Leonardo's image the Moon would fit above the man's head.
Also shown (below left and right) is a construction for a square using ruler and compasses. Octagons soon follow.

Return to the Beginning

Page 283

'I stand before the masters who witnessed the genesis, who were the authors of their own forms, who walked the dark, circuitous passages of their own becoming. . .

I stand before the masters who witnessed the transformation of the body of a man into the body in spirit, who were witnesses to resurrection when the corpse of Osiris entered the mountain and the soul of Osiris walked out shining. . . when he came forth from death, a shining thing, his face white with heat. . .

I stand before the masters who know the histories of the dead, who decide which tales to hear again, who judge the books of lives as either fun or empty, who are themselves authors of truth. And they are Isis and Osiris, the divine intelligences. And when the story is written and the end is good and the soul of a man is perfected, with a shout they lift him into heaven. . .'

Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead (Norrnandi Ellis translation)

To Sorcerers and Magicians number FIVEis the most powerful - five is the mark of the pentacle, a five pointed star drawn by extending the sides of a Pentagon. Five surely is in the possession of the occult. And the Pentagon is the geometric figure in which the golden ratio of classical art and architecture is found most.

JOSEPH AND HIS BROTHERS

Thomas Mann

1875 - 1955

JOSEPH THE PROVIDER

ALL TOO BLISSFUL

"But I am King, and teacher; I may not think what I cannot teach. Whereas such a one very soon learns not even to think the unteachable."
Here Tiy, his mother, cleared her throat, rattled her ornaments, and said, looking ahead of her into space:
"Pharaoh is to be praised when he practises statesmanship in matters of religious belief and spares the simplicity of the many. That is why I warned him not to wound the popular attachment to Usir, king of the lower regions. There is no contradiction between knowing and sparing, in this connection; and the office of teacher need not darken knowledge. Never have priests taught the multitude all they themselves know. They have told them what was wholesome, and wisely left in the realm of the mysteries what was not beneficial. Thus knowledge and wisdom are together in the world, truth and forbearance. The mother recommends that it so remain."
"Thank you, Mama," said Amenhotep, with a deprecating bow. "Thank you for the contribution. It is very valuable and will for / Page 968 / eternal ages be held in honour. But we are speaking of two different things. My Majesty speaks of the fetters which the teaching puts upon the thoughts of God; yours refers to priestly statecraft, which divides teaching and knowledge. But Pharaoh would not be arrogant, and there is no greater arrogance than such a division. No, there
is no arrogance in the world greater than that of dividing the children of our Father into initiate and uninitiate and teaching double words: all-knowingly for the masses, knowingly in the inner circle. No, we must speak what we know, and witness what we have seen. Pharaoh wants to do nothing but improve the teaching, even though it be made hard for him by the teaching.

THE EARTH CHRONICLES

Zecharia Sitchin 1980

The Stairway to Heaven
O, how fallen from heaven art thou,
a Morning Star, son of Dawn!
Felled to the ground
is he who the nations enfeebled.
Thou didst say in thine heart
"I will ascend unto the heavens,
above the planets of El I shall raise my throne;
On the Mount of Assembly I shall sit,
on the Crest of Zaphon.
Upon the Raised Platform I shall go up,
a Lofty One I shall be!"
But nay, to the Nether World you shalt go,
down to the depths of a pit.

THE DIVINE INVASION

Phillip Dick 1981

"The time you have waited for has come. The work is complete: the final world is here.

He has been transplanted and is alive."

-Mysterious voice in the night

Page 85

'What's wrong?' Elias put his arm around the boy and lifted him up to hold him. 'I've never seen you so upset.'

'He listened to that while my mother was dying!' Emmanuel stared into Elias's bearded face.

I remember, Emmanuel said to himself. I am beginning to remember who I am.

Elias said, 'What is it?' He held the boy tight.

It is happening, Emmanuel realized. At last. That was the first of the signal that I - I myself - prepared. Knowing it would eventually fire.

The two of them gazed into each other's faces. Neither the boy nor the man spoke. Trembling, Emmanuel clung to the old bearded man; he did not let himself fall.

'Do not fear,' Elias said.

'Elijah,' Emmanuel said. 'You are Elijah who comes first. Before the great and terrible day.'

Elias, holding the boy and rocking him gently, said, 'You have nothing to fear on that day.'

'But he does,' Emmanuel said. 'The Adversary whom' we hate. His time has come. I fear for him, knowing as I do, now, what is ahead.'

'Listen,' Elias said quietly.

How you have fallen from heaven, bright morning star, felled to the earth, sprawling helpless across the nations! You thought in your own mind, I will scale the heavens; I will set my throne high above the stars of God, I will sit on the mountain where the gods meet in the far recesses of the north. I will rise high above the cloud-banks and make myself like the Most High. Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the depths of the abyss. Those who see you will stare at you, they will look at you and ponder. . .

Page 86

'You see?' Elias said. 'He is here. This is his place, this little world. He made it his fortress two thousand years ago, and set up a prison for the people as he did in Egypt.

For two thousand years the people have been crying and there was no response, no aid. He has them all. He thinks he is safe.'

Emmanuel, clutching the old man, began to cry.

'Still afraid?' Elias said.

Emmanuel said, 'I cry with them. I cry with my mother.

I cry with the dying dog who did not cry. I cry for them. And for Belial who fell, the bright morning star. Fell from heaven and began it all.'

And, he thought, I cry for myself. I am my mother; I am the dying dog and the suffering people, and I, he thought, am that bright morning star, too. . . even Belial; I am that and what it has become.
The old man held him fast."
